What is Salah?

Salah, or Namaz, is the formal prayer performed by Muslims five times a day. It is a ritual act of worship made up of a series of physical movements, standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting, each accompanied by specific recitations from the Quran. The five daily prayers are Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. They keep a Muslim connected to Allah and serve as a reminder of His presence throughout the day.

The Importance of Praying Salah

Salah is an essential part of Islamic life. It is a direct link between a Muslim and Allah, and it provides spiritual nourishment and discipline. Through Salah, Muslims reaffirm their submission to Allah and seek His guidance and mercy.

Strengthens Faith: By praying regularly, Muslims strengthen their faith and show obedience to Allah.

Brings Peace: Salah offers calm and a pause in the day, which helps with stress.

Purifies the Soul: Prayer encourages humility and gratitude.

Creates a Sense of Community: Praying in congregation at the masjid brings Muslims together.

Namaz: A Step-by-Step Guide

Performing Salah correctly is important for gaining its full benefit. Here is a step-by-step guide:

1. Make Wudu (Ablution)

Before offering Salah, perform Wudu. This ritual washing ensures you are in a state of physical cleanliness.

Steps for Wudu:

Wash your hands up to the wrists three times.

Rinse your mouth and nose with water three times.

Wash your face three times.

Wash your arms up to the elbows three times.

Wipe your head with wet hands once.

Wash your feet up to the ankles three times.

2. Make the Intention (Niyyah)

Intention (Niyyah) is the first step before starting Salah. You should have the intention in your heart that you are performing the prayer for the sake of Allah. It does not need to be said out loud, but it should be present in your mind.

3. Start with Takbir al-Ihram (Opening Takbir)

Begin your Salah by saying "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest) while raising your hands to your ears. This marks the start of your prayer.

4. Stand in Qiyam (Standing Posture)

After the opening Takbir, stand straight with your hands folded on your chest or slightly below it. While standing, recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by another Surah or verses from the Quran.

Al-Fatiha:

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim

Alhamdu lillahi rabbil 'alamin

Ar-Rahman ir-Rahim

Maliki yawmid-din

Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in

Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim

Siratal-ladhina an'amta 'alayhim ghayril-maghdubi 'alayhim wa-ladh-dallin

5. Ruku (Bowing)

After reciting the Surah, say "Allahu Akbar" and move into the bowing position (Ruku). Your back and head should be parallel to the floor. Place your hands on your knees, keeping your elbows out, and say "Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem" (Glory is to my Lord, the Almighty) three times.

6. I'tidal (Standing after Ruku)

Rise from the bowing position, saying "Sami' Allahu liman Hamidah" (Allah hears the one who praises Him). Once you are standing upright, say "Rabbana lakal hamd" (Our Lord, to You is due all praise).

7. Sujud (Prostration)

Next, go into prostration (Sujud) by saying "Allahu Akbar" and placing your forehead, nose, palms, knees and toes on the ground. This position symbolises humility and submission before Allah. In Sujud, say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory is to my Lord, the Most High) three times.

8. Jalsa (Sitting Posture)

After Sujud, rise to the sitting position (Jalsa), saying "Allahu Akbar." Sit on your legs with your palms on your thighs. This brief pause gives you a moment of stillness between the two prostrations.

9. Second Sujud (Prostration)

Perform a second prostration, saying "Allahu Akbar," and repeat the same words as the first Sujud. This completes one rak'ah.

10. Final Tashahhud (Testification)

In the final sitting, recite the Tashahhud:

"At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat."

"As-salamu 'alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh."

"As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin."

"Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu."

11. Tasleem (Salutation)

Conclude your Salah by turning your head to the right and saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah" (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you), then repeating it to the left. See the How to Pray Salah | Namaz Guide Wall Sticker
